Unlike our 2025 version, this 2026 edition of China Red is unblended, using only native Yunnan gushu material. The choice to use higher quality material sets this version of China Red apart from others on the market. The mouthfeel and aftertaste are the standout features of this red tea, particularly the hui gan and cooling sensation. Favourable weather has also given this 2026 vintage a more intense aroma compared to last year’s.

You can brew this tea any way you like, trying different water temperatures. When brewing this tea gongfu style we like to have a long session with a 5-6g/100ml ratio and short infusions (10 seconds or less). This tea extracts easily, yielding a rich brew with a smooth water path. The mouthfeel is even better when the liquor cools down. This tea also brews well ‘grandpa style’ in a mug, becoming more fruity when brewed this way.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0600/1560/7871/files/DSC07621_52d3ddd8-2f16-43ca-8702-cfcb54920577.jpg?v=1777902751
tanyang-cai-cha
Ping Guo Xiang Tanyang Gongfu

Harvest: Spring 2025

Origin: Shekou, Fu'an, Fujian Province

Cultivar: Tanyang Cai Cha (Tanyang heirloom varietal)

Processing: Traditional

Aroma profile: Apple

A mellow and sweet heirloom Tanyang Cai Cha made by the Li Family according to their processing style. While the Gold Medal is made by the Li family, this tea is made by the Chen family, and so there are stylistic differences between the two, despite the same cultivar and overall quality. This tea possesses an elegant and refined floral and fruity fragrance.

Because of the cultivar's popularity for New Technique processing, there is a glut of Jin Mu Dan Tanyang Gongfu’s on the market. Mass produced versions often suffer from improper fermentation, and subsequent over-roasting to cover up these flaws. Beyond basic requirements like a clean ecology, good Jin Mu Dan from Tanyang requires a light shaking step to develop the floral-fruity aroma, and a careful charcoal roast. For the shaking step, the machine is set at much slower setting than you would see for oolong making, in order to develop aroma without over-oxidising or breaking too many leaves. After drying, additional charcoal roasting enhances and fixes aroma.

The Chen Family’s Jin Mu Dan does not compromise on any of the above aspects. It is picked from higher altitude ecological gardens. Tanyang Village is actually a lower elevation area. The better tea is grown in ecological gardens deeper in the mountains around Fu’an, away from fertilisers or pesticides.

Suggested brewing: 5-7g in a 100ml porcelain vessel

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0600/1560/7871/files/DSC07759_ea806063-0c25-45e0-b6c0-7ff31e486096.jpg?v=1779517652
gushu-dianhong
2026 Gushu Dianhong

Harvest: Spring 2026

Origin: Baoshan, Yunnan

Cultivar: Da Ye Zhong (Yunnan Big Leaf Varietal)

An 'ancient tree' dianhong from Baoshan in the northwest of Yunnan. Both teas have been charcoal roasted, and are of equivalent quality. The Old Tree Tanyang Cai Cha is from Fankeng in the mountains surrounding Fu'an. The elevation here is about 1200m, much higher than the elevation of Tanyang Village. The raw material is Tanyang Cai Cha, the heirloom varietal for Panyong Congou. The Old Tree Qimen Maofeng, currently exclusive to this set, is made from heirloom Zhuye Zhong trees at around 800m elevation. These teas are similar in both picking grade and processing styles, so this set is a rare opportunity to directly compare the heirloom varietals of two historic red teas from Fujian and Anhui. When tasting through these, it can be interesting to think about the inherent characteristics of each varietal, the effect of elevation, oxidation levels, and how bitterness presents itself, if at all.

We recommend brewing these teas in a 100ml porcelain gaiwan with boiling water.

Each set contains:

6g - Old Tree Tanyang Cai Cha - 2026 Harvest

6g - Old Tree Qimen Maofeng- 2026 Harvest

Total Net Weight of 12g

Harvest: Spring 2025

Origin: Fu'an, Fujian Province

Varietal: Cai Cha

In Fu’an, approximately 35 percent of tea production is devoted to the famous Panyong Congou red tea. The two teas in this set have been hand-refined. The hand-refining process is part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage techniques of Panyong Congou red tea.

The hand refining process involves the use of bamboo sieves of varying sizes and multiple techniques to sift the coarser leaves from the finer leaves and buds. After this, a single batch of tea is divided into several separate grades. Then the producer blends the tea together again, according to their desired proportion of buds and leaves. Historically this was done to ensure consistency across batches when Tanyang Gongfu was exported, but today producers do it to customise their own teas according to their desired taste.

The hand refining process is enormously labour-intensive, requiring hours of standing and shaking the bamboo sieves. This is why Tanyang Gongfu is called ‘Gongfu’ and also why the teas in this set are so expensive. Most producers do not, or cannot, do this refining anymore. Most refining (but not all) can now be done by machine, but machines lack the intentionality of human producers. Since every batch is different, the human element is still required for the very best teas.

The Zhuangyuan Tanyang Gongfu is already a very high end Panyong Congou. The 1851 Tanyang Gongfu is the only possible higher grade, named after the birth year of Tanyang Gongfu. The labour involved in going from the Zhaungyuan to 1851 increases the price from around 90 cents per gram to over $4 per gram. For that reason, we have kept the quantities small to make these teas more accessible. This particular Little Yellow is made from qunitzhong bushes growing wild in abandoned gardens. The menhuang process has been properly executed. Yellowing combined with a charcoal bake finish has given a smooth and refined feel to what is quite robust and burly material. It’s a tea we’ve been enjoying a lot during the Autumn season.

Suggested Brewing: 5g in a 100ml porcelain vessel with boiling water.
