Old trees are patient, they have been around for a long time. This wild red (black) tea rewards patient brewing. It’s all about the aftertaste that builds up over many steeps.

Picked from very old trees that grow wild and unmanaged on Wuliang Shan, this is a kind of red tea that can be enjoyed by puerh tea drinkers. Like puerh tea the fragrance is more in the throat than the nose. The emphasis is on long-lasting aftertaste and mouthfeel rather than ephemeral aroma.

Yunnan red teas are either sun-dried or dried with hot air. This one is sun-dried. We greatly prefer sun-drying for old tree material like this, because this process keeps the fragrance in the liquor and at the back of the throat. Hot air drying can create more fragrance in the nose, but usually this fragrance is too short-lasting, disappearing after a couple of brews. The opposite is true with this sun-dried red. The aroma is faint at first, but then a long-lasting sweet fruit fragrance appears in the aftertaste. Sun-dried red tea is also more suitable for aging. This one can be kept in storage for aging just like puer tea.
